TRNOVO FOREST
The Trnovo Plateau represents the extreme northwestern part of the mighty Dinaric Alps. It’s a diverse landscape filled with numerous natural phenomena and exceptionally unspoiled nature. It covers approximately 105 km² of woodland and includes several forest reserves, the largest of which are Golak Peaks and Spruce Valley (Golaki in Smrekova Draga).
The highest peak in the area is Mali Golak (1,495 m).
Various geological, geographical, and climatic factors meet in this region, creating the remarkable diversity of Trnovo’s flora and fauna. A particularly interesting natural phenomenon found here are the so-called “mrazišča” frost pockets — areas where temperature inversion creates unusually cold microclimates.
The highest peaks are covered with shrubs and grasslands, while most of the plateau is dominated by mixed beech–fir forests. In some areas, these forests are replaced by pure spruce stands. The region is home to a unique mixture of Dinaric and Alpine plant species, many of which are endemic to this area. The Trnovo Forest is home to some of Europe’s most iconic wildlife, including red deer, chamois, wild boar, golden eagle, Ural owl, brown bear, wolf, and the elusive lynx..
