TRNOVO FOREST
The Trnovo plateau represent the extreme northwestern part of the mighty Dinaric Alps. A diverse landscape with numerous natural phenomena and exceptionally unspoiled nature. The highest peak in the area is Mali Golak (1495 m). Various geological, geographical and climatic factors mix in this area, which dictate the diversity of the Trnovo flora and fauna.
The Trnovo forest covers as much as 105 km2 of forest with a series of various forest reserves, the largest of which are Smrekova draga – Golaki.
Only the highest peaks are covered with scrub and grasslands, but otherwise the area is covered with mixed beech-fir forest. In some places it is replaced by pure spruce stands. Here we can find mixed Dinaric and Alpine pant species, many of them endemitc to this area.
A special natural phenomenon are “mraziče” – frost pockers, areas with temperature inversion.
The most carismotic species we can find here are deer, chamois, mouflon, wild boar, brown bear, wolf, lynx, jackal, moutain eagel and owls…
